Beerfelde Energy Park

Wind energy, battery storage and an own substation form an integrated energy system

The energy supply is changing. In future, it will no longer be enough simply to generate electricity from renewable sources. What matters is how this electricity can be stored, distributed and supplied reliably. The Beerfelde Energy Park demonstrates how this can be achieved: a wind farm, battery energy storage system and own substation work together like interlocking gears to form an integrated energy system. Together, they ensure that wind energy is used efficiently, the electricity grid is relieved and renewable energy becomes available more flexibly. Beerfelde therefore represents a new generation of energy projects and the energy supply of tomorrow.

Generate. Store. Connect

Everything comes together in Beerfelde

With this project in the Oder-Spree district, PNE is planning the construction of a wind farm with a capacity of approximately 98 MW. This will be complemented by a green electricity storage system with a capacity of 30 MW and storage capacity of 60 MWh, as well as an own substation.

The project will comprise 14 wind turbines, among the highest-yield onshore wind turbines in Europe. This makes the energy park one of the largest projects in Germany to date in which wind energy and battery storage are being developed together. The interaction of these components creates a system that uses the available grid connection capacity particularly efficiently and provides additional flexibility for the electricity supply.

Why battery storage?

Flexibility for the energy system

Electricity should be available precisely when it is needed. Battery energy storage systems make it possible to shift electricity feed-in over time. They absorb electrical energy, store it and release it whenever it is required. In this way, they integrate renewable energy efficiently into the energy system.

The storage system...

  • makes wind energy more flexible to use
  • reduces grid bottlenecks
  • improves system efficiency
  • reduces curtailment
  • increases economic value
  • makes better use of existing grid infrastructure
  • strengthens security of supply

About the energy systems

PNE AG designs high-performance energy systems

The specifications listed below are subject to change and may be adjusted during the further course of the project:

Wind turbines:

  • Number: 14
  • Type: Enercon E175
  • Rotor diameter: 175 m
  • Hub height: 162 m / 175 m
  • Total height: 250 m / 262 m
  • Output per wind turbine: 7 MW
  • Total output: 98 MW

Battery energy storage system:

  • Storage capacity: 70.21 MWh
  • Total output: 32.2 MW

Substation:

  • Configuration: Double substation
  • Transformer manufacturer: GE Grid
  • Transformer rating: 2 x 63/80 MWA
  • Manufacturer of operations building and transformer bays: Gräper

With an annual electricity production of approximately 276,400 MWh, the facilities can supply around 74,300 three-person households¹ while avoiding approximately 210,000 tonnes of CO₂e emissions² each year.

Environment and nature conservation

Balancing the interests of the environment, people and nature

Environmental and nature conservation measures play an important role in the permitting process for our projects. Sensitive habitats, such as bird migration routes, are already considered during site selection. In addition, all necessary protection and mitigation measures for endangered animal and plant species are implemented. As a result, any impact on nature and the landscape is fully compensated.

Protection and mitigation measures for endangered animal and plant species:
The wind turbines in Beerfelde will be equipped with automatic shadow flicker shutdown systems as well as bat and bird protection shutdown systems. In addition, nocturnal species will be protected from potential glare effects through the installation of demand-driven night-time aviation lighting. A semi-automatic mowing detection system will also be deployed throughout the wind farm, triggering the automatic shutdown of wind turbines during agricultural operations.

Ecological compensation measures:
In close cooperation with independent environmental consultants and the responsible authorities, including nature conservation and forestry authorities, PNE has assessed and carefully weighed all potential impacts of the Beerfelde Wind Farm and identified effective measures to protect the environment. Expert assessments confirm that the project complies with all applicable nature conservation requirements.

Measures to reduce emissions and nuisance effects:
The maximum permitted limits for noise and shadow flicker will, of course, be complied with. To prevent ice throw, the wind turbines will be equipped with ice detection systems. If icing is detected, the turbine will automatically stop and the rotor will be brought to a standstill.

Regional value creation

Local communities matter to us

It is important to us to develop our projects together with the people who live in the region.

Regional value creation is achieved through a range of individual concepts. For example, PNE seeks to involve local companies in construction and landscape maintenance activities wherever possible, thereby creating economic value within the region.

PNE welcomes the opportunity created by Section 6 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG 2023) to allow municipalities within a radius of 2.5 kilometres of each wind turbine to participate financially in project operations. It is therefore part of PNE’s corporate philosophy to offer the affected municipalities a voluntary payment of EUR 0.002 per kilowatt-hour generated. A prerequisite for municipal participation under EEG 2023 is compliance with the applicable statutory requirements within the respective project. In addition, neighbouring municipalities will receive EUR 5,000 per installed MW under the Brandenburg Wind Turbine Levy Act.
